Playing Outside
Play, nature and services for young children

A Children in Europe special conference supported by Fife Council

16 September 2010, Balbirnie House Hotel, Markinch, Fife

Research shows that outdoor learning and playing outside contribute significantly to the happiness, learning, development and well-being of children, particularly in the early years.  However, fears about health and safety and risk, and the popularity of computer-based games and activities have contributed to the recent decline of outdoor play as a learning environment for children aged 0-10.

This major conference, organised by Children in Scotland in partnership with Fife Council, will review research into outdoor activities, play and nature, and explore ways in which outdoor play can be re-invigorated in a cost-effective way.  With a stimulating mix of presentations, question and answer sessions and parallel workshops, the conference will look at various European approaches to developing outdoor play, as well as learning from exciting developments here in Scotland.

The conference will be of interest and value to:

  • staff from schools and out -of-school care across education, health, social work, community, family and leisure services
  • those with an interest in and responsibility for outdoor learning and play
  • in fact, all those working with children aged 0-10 years
