What we do
Children in Scotland makes connections between research and policy,
and practitioners' everyday experiences, to influence policy and
to develop best practice in working with and for children and young people.
Participation
Promoting children and young people's participation
in decision-making and policy development is one of our co-ordinating
themes and forms an important part of all our
work. We run a Participation Network and
have developed an online record of participation projects across Scotland.
Policy and research
Children in Scotland informs and
influences legislation affecting children and young
people by holding consultations, running working groups, producing
briefings and gathering information and opinion. With Youthlink Scotland,
we run the cross party group on children and
young people to raise debate among MSPs on topical issues.
Children
in Scotland is the Scottish base for the 4
Nations Child Policy Network,
a free policy information service operating across the UK.
We are commissioned
and we seek funding to carry out policy-related
research taking the form of surveys, in-depth interviews,
mapping exercises and consultations.
Practice development
Giving busy practitioners the chance to reflect
upon and develop their work is the aim of our many training
programmes,
seminars and conferences. Working in partnership
with a range of specialist partners, many of who are our members, we
work to improve the quality
and effectiveness of services for children, young people and their families
by sharing knowledge and experience and offering guidance. We are registered
Continuing Professional Development providers with the General Teaching
Council for Scotland.
Communication
Our monthly subscription magazine, Children in
Scotland,
brings together news and analysis on the legislation, policies, research
and good practice that help shape young lives. We also publish the twice-yearly
English-language issue of Children in Europe alongside
our eight European partners. Our numerous publications, policy briefings,
factsheets,
reports and a daily email news service help our members make sense of
policy, research and current debates on children and young people. We
handle press inquiries and promote our work through our press
releases.
Enquire - the Scottish
advice service for additional support for learning
Children in Scotland runs Enquire, an advice service for parents
and carers of children and young people who have additional support needs,
and professionals working with them.
Resolve:asl - Scotland's
independent additional support for learning mediation service.
Resolve:asl is an independent service
which provides a means for enabling the resolution of disputes that
can arise for parents/carers of children and young people
with additional support needs. The service is managed by Children in
Scotland and offers service level agreements for local authorities for
mediation services.
