Participation / Social Work Report

My Turn to Talk?
The Participation of Looked After and Accommodated Children in Decision-Making about Their Own Care
Interviews with looked after children and key practitioners offer a revealing portrait of how "participation of children in the decision-making process" actually occurs in two local authorities.

Children in Scotland's research section has completed an in-depth, small scale study of perceptions about the value and effectiveness of looked after children participating in major decisions about their lives and care. This qualitative research in two Scottish local authorities includes interviews not only with the children themselves, but also with social workers and other key professionals.

"My Turn to Talk?" presents the findings of a small-scale, qualitative research study on the participation of looked after children in decision-making about their lives and futures. It explores the views and feelings of these children about formal hearings (such as the Looked After Children Review)as well as their perceptions of their own participation in day-to-day decision-making. Beyond the excerpts of interviews with these children, as well as social workers and other key professionals, this report presents a literature review and a set of recommendations. This research was prepared for the Scottish Executive Education Department.
