Young children in charge 1
A small Italian community with big ideas for children
*Published September 2008

A striking picture of how powerful values and local authority commitment have driven delivery of early childhood services in a small north Italian community.

In the small Tuscan community of San Miniato services for children under three are delivered according to core values which are critically important to the UK’s aspirations for its own early childhood provision. Delivery is child-centred, teachers learn to focus on creating opportunities for learning and family participation is central.

‘Young children in charge’ offers a unique insight into how these powerful values, which go beyond 0-3 and can be applied to all learning, are translated into practice.
