Joined-up Thinking: supporting brain development in the early years Ref: 1620 - Training seminar A one-day training seminar facilitated by Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, Honorary Senior Lecturer, School of Psychology, University of Dundee This session will explore what we now know about children’s brain development, focusing in particular on the impact of social interactions. We will look at how experiences of abuse and neglect, as compared to predictability and calm, can have long-term consequences for the lives of children and adults. We will think in depth about what can be done, in families and daycare settings to help create resilience and emotional stability. We will also explore the ways in which nurseries, daycare, and child-minding settings can be organised so that they have the greatest chance of generating happiness and calm for everyone and look at the relationships between staff and childrens’ experiences and how to enhance them. The session will draw on the experiences of nurseries who have made changes to their settings or routines, to provide real-life examples of how easily and inexpensively positive changes can be made. Topics to be covered include:
Venue: in Edinburgh Duration: Full-day Who should attend: . Facilitators: Suzanne Zeedyk - Dr. Suzanne Zeedyk currently holds the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, at the University of Dundee, where she has been based since 1993. Her research expertise focuses on the early communicative interactions of parents and infants. In recent years, this has extended to the study of interventions for communicative disorders such as autism, sensory impairment, and dementia. In 2011, she set up an independent training enterprise to allow her to disseminate more widely the science of the early years. She now spends much of her time speaking to the public about the psychological and neuroscientific bases of communicative interaction. She works closely with organisations throughout the UK to increase awareness of the decisions we take about caring for children, showing how those decisions are integrally connected to our vision for the kind of society we wish to build.
