Action for Children

Thriving for Life: combating neglect through childhood and beyond
Ref: 1631 - Seminar
Child neglect is the most commonly reported child protection concern in the UK, yet the issue receives comparatively little attention, and can be very difficult to assess and properly respond to.

This seminar will look at the impact of neglect at all stages of a child’s life, allowing delegates to share experiences and good practice, and to discuss the way forward with experts from across the sector.

The day will focus on examining the prevalence, causes and consequences of child neglect, and look at what presently works, how good our collective response to child neglect is and whether young people get the help they need when they need it.

The event aims to:
  • help delegates in identifying and assessing the signs and impact of neglect, and examine their responses
  • share good practice and focus on plans for action
  • raise awareness amongst practitioners and help them to influence future policy
  • and look at the positive impact we can have at all stages of a child’s life.
Confirmed speakers include:
  • Sir Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland
  • Boyd McAdam, Head of Better Life Chances Unit, Children's Rights and Wellbeing Division, Scottish Government
  • Louise Warde Hunter, Strategic Director of Children's Services, Action for Children
  • Linda Davidson, Family Support Service Manager, Borders Council
  • Marion Macleod, Senior Policy and Parliamentary Officer, Children in Scotland
