Understand the key changes in the new Equality Act 2010 and what equality law means for education providers

This training course will provide an understanding of how the Equality Act (EA) affects those working with children and young people. How can staff fulfill their duties under the Act as well as embed this as a strong and positive attitude to inclusion? This course will help to unpick the issues and explain in simple terms what you need to do to comply with the EA.

Learning objectives
  • understand the key changes in the new Equality Act 2010
  • examine what equality law means for schools and education providers and what is unlawful in the act
  • gain an overview of key concepts in the act
  • look at what ‘reasonable adjustment’ is?
  • learn how to do impact assessments on establishment policy with reference to the act
  • examine dispute resolution and enforcement.

Venue: in Edinburgh
Duration: Full-day

Who should attend: . The workshop will be relevant to all those working directly with children and their families throughout the statutory, voluntary or independent sectors, including childcare workers, social workers, teachers, health visitors, mental health practitioners and early years workers.


Facilitators:
Gerry Shields - Gerry has taught in all sectors of education from primary to secondary, from mainstream to special education. Working as Depute and Acting Head in the E.B.D. sector, he used a Whole School Approach to turn a failing school into a sector leading one and as Quality Improvement Officer and he advised, supported and challenged schools and nurseries in turning ideas and concepts of National Government and local Authority into practice. His responsibility has covered areas of inclusion, pupil support, learning support, mental well being, mediation and restorative approaches to resolving conflict from nursery, primary to secondary, as well as quality assurance responsibility in preparation for H.M.I.E.
