Developing effective independent information and support services for children and young people accessing Self-directed Support
The Social Care (Self-directed Support) Scotland Act 2013 came into force in 2014. Self-directed Support enables adults and children and young people to choose how their support is provided, and gives them as much control as they want of their individual budget.
Children in Scotland was funded from 2013-2015 to help implement the Scottish Government’s commitment to the provision of independent information and support for children and young people on Self-directed Support.
"I Want the Same As You: Developing effective independent information and support services for children and young people accessing Self-directed Support" is the final report of this two year project, produced by Dr Susan Elsley and Children in Scotland. This report was published July 2015.
"I Want the Same As You" considers what makes for an effective independent information and support service for children, young people and their parents and carers accessing Self-directed Support. It draws on:
- work undertaken by Children in Scotland on Self-directed Support, specifically through consultation and engagement with children, young people and parents and carers and further research by Dr. Susan Elsley on behalf of Children in Scotland
- evidence from other organisations with an interest in Self-directed Support
- relevant literature on the provision of advice, information, support and advocacy to children and young people
- Scottish Government guidance and policy documents on Self- directed Support and other related areas.
Children in Scotland has also produced a short, three page summary of final recommendations and key messages from our consultation and engagement work with parents, carers, children and young people.
