 Working For Inclusion

Working in an inclusive way with children and families, across agencies and age groups

Project partner leading on this theme:

Comenius Foundation for Child Development, Warsaw, Poland www.frd.org.pl

The Foundation was established to create the best possible conditions for children to build their own self-esteem, to develop self-reliance and creativity, and to inspire their natural curiosity. Of particular concern is the wellbeing of those children who are less likely to get a good start in adult life because they come from small communities, and from economically and culturally disadvantaged backgrounds. The Foundation works closely with parents, teachers, non-governmental organisations, local authorities and child-serving institutions to promote modern educational approaches and high educational standards.

Discussion questions:

  • What does it mean to work ‘in an inclusive way’? Who are at risk of being excluded, why and how?
  • What qualities, values and ethics are required to work in an inclusive way? Is democracy a fundamental value? What theories and theorists can give inspiration for working in this way? What are the implications for workforce roles, qualifications and development?
  • What examples – historically and contemporaneously – are there of such work? Does social pedagogy  (in Scotland, Scottish pedagogy) provide a good example of a profession that is well equipped to work in an inclusive way?

Activities and outcomes

A study visit and national event is planned for May 2010, hosted by Comenius Foundation for Child Development.
